We have an energetic and dedicated committee working on the conference, and it is coming together well. We apologize for the delay in getting the schedule out as it has taken us more time to put together just the right program. As you may know, the conference focuses on keeping the aging workforce actively working, engaged, and healthy. We are excited by the line-up of excellent pre-conference educational programs: Dr. John Howard, Director of NIOSH, Sloan Center of Aging at Boston College; Linda Tarr-Whelen, Catherine Dempsey lecturer as well as a host of educational topics on health and aging that will be available to you at this meeting. You will soon receive the information via an e-blast as well as how to register online. We look forward to seeing you in Anaheim, California, April 10-15.
As you can see from our Scorecard (below), AAOHN continues moving forward. We are pleased with our progress and know that this can only happen because you have rejoined the association. We encourage you to contact your colleagues and invite them to join as well. If we all rejoin and rededicate ourselves to the mission of the organization, AAOHN will thrive not just survive.
I hope you have a wonderful February even if the Groundhog did see his shadow. If you have questions about the organization, please contact us at the AAOHN National Office.
I look forward to seeing you soon.

Kay N. Campbell, EdD, RN-C, COHN-S, FAAOHN

AAOHN Recovery Plan and Final Creditor Settlement
Good news! AAOHN is on schedule to make the successful completion of the Recovery Plan a reality this year and has formally settled claims with all commercial creditors. Until January of 2010, the full financial impact of the transition and the Atlanta lease termination was not definite. All creditors' claims are now settled. The table and bar chart below show the reconciled debt balance for the Recovery Plan.
The debt level for January is more than the December debt as a result of finalizing the terms of creditor agreements and reconciling all invoices. The debt level after the January reconciliation is $133,768.38 dollars higher than it was at the end of 2009. There are several factors contributing to the final balance. The reconciliation revealed previous payment checks that were never mailed to creditors. In addition, some creditors disputed the previously determined estimates. Finally, the Atlanta lease was settled for 34% over the original amount assigned to the Recovery Budget.
We are well on our way to meeting our financial goals related to stability and a strong fiscal foundation for the future! This is significant due to the membership renewals, contributions from chapters and groups, purchases of CNE products, marketing support from some of our sponsors, and flexibility from some of our creditors. In addition, AAOHN Board and Staff are working diligently to govern and manage in the most cost effective, value-driven manner possible.

Diet May Help Protect Against Gene Changes in Smokers
According to a study, which is the first step to understanding a complex association, folate, leafy green vegetables, and some multivitamins could serve as protective factors against lung cancer in current and former smokers. The study was supported by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health. The study appeared online January 12, 2010, in Cancer Research. For more information about NIH and its programs, visit http://www.nih.gov/.
OSHA Publishes Booklet on Hexavalent Chromium
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently published a booklet called Hexavalent Chromium, which outlines industry requirements for hexavalent chromium standards. Workers exposed to this toxic chemical can develop lung cancer and damage to the nose, throat and respiratory system. For more information, visit http://www.osha.gov/.
New OSHA Videos Provide Education on Proper Respirator Fit and Use
OSHA has produced two new videos that feature training and guidance on respirator safety. The "Respirator Safety" video shows healthcare workers how to correctly put on and take off respirators, such as N95s. The "Difference between Respirators and Surgical Masks" video explains the particular uses for each respirator and how the different respirators prevent worker exposure to infectious diseases. Viewers can watch both English and Spanish versions by visiting the Department of Labor's YouTube site.
OSHA's Quick Tips on Preventing Cold-related Injuries and Illnesses
In light of recent frigid temperatures, OSHA is reminding workers and employers whose work is concentrated outside to take the necessary precautions to prevent cold-related injuries and illnesses. OSHA's "Cold Stress Pocket Card" (English/Spanish) provides recommendations to protect workers in cold environments. For example, take frequent short breaks in warm dry shelters to allow the body to warm up. Electronic copies can be downloaded from the agency's publications page, or printed copies can be ordered online or by calling (202)693-1888.
Need for Substance Abuse Treatment among Americans over Age 50 Projected to Double by 2020
According to a new report, the need for substance abuse treatment among Americans over age 50 is projected to double by 2020. A new study conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) indicates that the aging of the baby boom generation is resulting in a dramatic increase in levels of illicit drug use among adults 50 and older. According to this report, these increases may require the doubling of substance abuse treatment services needed for this population by 2020.
NIOSH Document Published on Genetics in the Workplace
